What a Story……

In the late 70’s Tom was not a member of the church. He liked a girl who was.  Her name was Linda Orchard. Linda had sisters, man, did she have sisters. Four of them.  They were all beautiful and outgoing, quite a combination. All good members of the church. The girl’s dad was the Ward mission leader.  His name was Bob.  Bob did not have the opportunity to serve a mission, so he loved his calling, and served with enthusiasm.

Every now and again, one of the girls would bring around a young man who was not a member of the church.  Since they were beautiful, outgoing, and fun, they attracted a lot of attention from boys and girls.  Whenever these friends would come over to the Orchard home, they were always greeted warmly and as one of the family by Momma Orchard. (Beth) Bobs wife and mom to all these girls.

Well Tom came over and felt something that he had not felt before.  As he got to know the family, he soon learned that they were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon).  Soon he wanted to learn more. Bob invited him to be taught about the church, in his home by the missionary’s.  Linda and Tom stopped dating, but Tom’s desire for the truth only grew.

With the help of the Orchard family, Bob, Beth, Karen, Suzanne, Linda, Lisa, David, Julie, and Robby, Tom Kauffman was baptized into the church. Now fast forward, 30 years or so.

Suzanne (Orchard) Wessel has a son Clay who was called on a mission for the church to Neuquén, Argentina.  A very remote mission for the church. She was on the mission web site and noticed a post by a Father of a missionary who was just called to Neuquén, Argentina.  His name….. Tom Kauffman.  She wondered, could this be the same Tom Kauffman who was taught the gospel in my home?  She reached out, and it was. Tom expressed his great love for the Orchard family, and what they did for him. Here is a picture of the two missionary’s, they happened to meet up on a transfer. It is truly a small world that is full of tender mercies.

Chapter 20: LAS MONTAÑAS‏

This one is of me when we run in the morning..about a mile to the lake every morning
So Bienvenidos de la Ciudad de Lago Puelo, El Bolson.

So that you know, I am no longer in Argentina.  I am in a different province.  It is called Chubut.  CHEW BUT! pronounced chewboot. haha we make some really stupid jokes when we can walk around for a long time! haha

This is my Area
So the area is ginormous.  It is as big as Salem and Spanish fork combined.  So, we use the collectivo to get around town and our good ole classic feet! collectivo means bus here.  It has been hard and a lot of walking.  They did not have any investigators except for some people that they contacted in the street.  So finding people to teach has been hard.  We have done a lot of walking.  Some how i still have my shoes. We have actually had some good luck and found some really good new investigators. We have found 4 really good people that are receptive and want us to come back. We have only taught once to all these people so the next week should be very fun.

We set a fecha bautismal with this guy named Ambrocio and we taught the restoration with his mom and it was really spiritual and we taught two by two. Our first lesson together as a companionship and the spirit sure helped us and filled the room.  We spoke in very broken Spanish and the spirit testified! I’m super excited to help him more this week! He is a straight up Gaucho.  He still uses the yokes for the cows and he has the cows pull huge logs around the streets and they are huge!!! We are going to help him this week! I’m going to send some pretty gangsta pictures your way!! You pumped?

We also met this guy who is the president of the junior soccer club franchise. They are very poor club and this guy built them a dirt field to play on and he has helped them out so much. He is the perfect example of pure love of Christ for kids.  He just wants to help everyone he can.  We taught him the book of Mormon, and we have helped him clean up the field a little bit.  THROWING ROCKS OFF OF IT!!! haha it was fun! Now we have set up some good lessons with him next week and he is exciteto continue on studying with us!! :)  HIs name is Lucas Bermudas!!  HE is Awesome!! Please pray for him.

We also are teaching this mother and this daughter, Anahi and Ailin. And she is willing to listen and had a lot of questions about joseph Smith and so we answered here and now we have lessons set up with her this coming week as well!!  We are going to set baptisms date with them.  I have a feeling we will see some baptisms this transfer family!! Please pray for these people!

We had a lesson with Anahi this week and we had a member there at the lesson and we asked him how the gospel has blessed his life and he talked about when he was inactive and he didn’t pay his tithing and how we should pay our tithing always.  It was good but it was the first lesson with her so we had to change the subject really quick and give him something else to talk about!! hahah I love the members here.. Not very educated but very funny.

Also pray for gisela!  She is just a lesson we had and she accepted a book of Mormon and we are going back to teach her and help with some service! So pray that god will prepare her for us and we can teach with the spirit!!

A little bit about the Beautiful area,

There are no asphalt roads. They are all dirt roads and log cabin houses.  You just need to look it up on the internet. Google maps.  LAGO PUELO, CHUBUT, ARGENTINA.  Its gorgeous! We are going to go to some waterfalls today for the p day.  We are about 45 min separated from any other elders so we will be by ourselves and become best friends!!

Ill send more pictures this coming week! I’m just getting settled in, in my little log cabin house!! I LOVE IT HERE!!!!

Love you guys more than a fat kid loves cake!  Keep it frosty and icee!! I’m blazing!!!

Chap. 19: TRANSFERS/LAGO PUELO‏

Friends along the way

HOLA FAMILIA,

I’m sorry I didn’t write yesterday.  I was in the middle of transfers all day and traveled the whole day.  I made it to my area safely yesterday night at like 6 :30.  It was buenisimo!!!!  HAHA just kidding it was a long day of traveling!!!  I left Cultral co with my heart torn out of my chest at 5:50 in the morning.  I traveled to NQN by huge double decker bus with pretty much beds and arrived at 7:30 in the morning.   Then I left Neuquén and arrived in a famous city called Bariloche at 3:00 in the afternoon.  After that I got on another bus and traveled from 4:30 to 6:30 to El Bolson.  Then from El Bolson I traveled to my area which is very remote, and stuck way up in the mountains like Park City, with a lake and way more trees.
Lago Puelo

The Most beautiful place in the mission.  I am told.  My area is called Lago Puelo.  It means lake of the many waters.  Right now I’m so blessed to be in this beautiful area.  Reminds me so much of home!!! haha rivers lakes and huge pine trees and rains all the time!!! :)
The Zone in Cultre Co

This week was good, and we did some good things in the last week of Cultral co.  Mostly said by to investigators and families that we had met and wanted to say goodbye to.  I seriously am going to miss that area with all my heart. I saw some many changes for good, and for worse and really grew as a person there.  It was so nice and really beautiful to me... but REALLY UGLY TO A NORMAL HUMAN EYE! haha and on Sunday that passed was mother’s day in Argentina, so happy mother’s day mom, from Argentina!!

I want to talk about the things I have learned there.  I really feel like I grew as a person and really learned a lot about myself.  In speaking of that, I mean humility, patience, I hope that is how you spell it in English. But I learned how to love every person and really know how to look on others instead of look inside on myself and change what I do instead of what others do.  Cultral co really has a special place in my heart and really I don’t think i will ever see it again and it makes me sad to think that.

We ended up not having much success like I have said in the past but I am really looking forward to seeing big things happen with this companion and this area!!

My new companion is named Elder Ogden and he is from Idaho.  He is a really good worker and he got to the mission with my best friend Elder Hill.  He has 17 months and we are really getting along well.  We have been able to talk and work hard for this first day.  I’m super excited to tell you about the changes that are coming to Lago Puelo!!!
Mi Casa

I love the my mission and I know that the church is true.  I know God loves us and I will never forget!!

Love you guys!
I love my Mission

Chapter 17: Miracles in a different form‏

The Zone
FAMILY!!! :)

What’s up guys?

I’m doing good down here in Argentina.  This week was different than any other week we have had.  I think I only worked in my area for 2 days this week.  But somehow it turned out good!!

Monday, like you guys already know was the day we had interviews.  And then Tuesday was our p day.

Wednesday, my companion went to Neuquen for a leader training conference with the zone leaders.  So I went and hung out with elder Hernandez and elder Lauguado in Aeropuerto B.  But, then I went and traveled over to help out the chileano and the Colombiano in the other area! So i was just running around.  It turned out to be a good day and i learned a lot! I had a good day.  Thursday we got to work in our area but we didn’t have too much time because we had to do planning weekly.  It was crazy but turned out good.  Nothing too excited passed but we had a good day.  We had to work with Elder Agee he is a zone leader and his companion went to Chile because his passport expired so he had to leave the country to reenter and have a new visa. Haha we are doing illegal things down here in Argentina.  Cool huh?
Friday, we didn’t do much, we worked hard but I was on intercambios with Elder Justiniano from Colombia.  And we worked in his area and saw a milagro!! I will tell you the story.
Me and elder Justin, we walking in the streets and didn’t really have plans.  They had set a baptism fecha with this kid but they haven’t been able to find him lately.  So we decided to pass by his house and talk to him.  He opened his door and also his heart.  He talked to us and understood the doctrine’s and answered all the questions right!! He just didn’t understand the gift of the Holy Ghost.  So we took some time and explained that.  I just asked him one simple question at the end, i asked him how he felt, and what are his thoughts, He started to cry... and said, [i want to change NOW.]  It was amazing.  We testified of the truthfulness and then prayed.  He didn’t make it to church. But he will get baptized.  I’m excited to see him change and take this step.
milagro of Jose

Other than that, we haven’t been so successful with investigators. But i have seen a lot of conversion with less active members.  That is what i have been able to do here in Cutral Co.  I have been able to help a ton of menos activos and i have seen milagros after milagros.  It sucks not having baptisms, but being able to see people reconvert to the gospel is just as good"! I really do love this work and love my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  I can’t stress enough how much love I have for him!!

Thank you for your support and have a Fantastic week family!!! LOVE YOU GUYS!!

Chapter 16 I think... I don’t remember..‏

I love Argentina!

We had to ride in the back of a trailer and two of them fell out.

Hola familia,

This week was nuts.  We did a lot this week and not a lot of time.
This week I don’t have a lot of time to write as well.

I want to talk about our investigators. This week our baptism with Cynthia fell through.  She did not attend church this week, she was supposed to.  Also her little sister is progressing and we have an appointment with them this week.  IM pumped to keep working with them.  I am not giving up on them.

We also met with Carlos, but he didn’t come to church either.  But his date is still up and going he just needs to get married still.  He is still an awesome guy and still working hard to complete his commitments with us.  I’m super excited to see his progress.
Service project in the huge Orchards and we had a big Barbeque.  We ate ñokis.

Yesterday, we had interviews with the President that is why I wasn’t able to have a p day yesterday. But today we have a super p day with our whole zone.  SO we are going to play some hard core basketball later today in the night.

I have been really thinking on how to become more spiritual.  I’ve been praying hard to have that spirituality and my prayers were answered in the interviews this week.

My comp and I are finally getting along really well.  He isn’t a robot anymore.  And we are actually talking really well.  The language is going really well and I’m loving learning.  I’m finally able to communicate and express my feelings.  I am able to understand everything as of right now. My understanding is better than my speaking... So, it’s very humbling.

Family, I love you guys.  I am still doing very well and love doing this work.  IM sorry this email sucks really bad this week. I’ll have a killer one next week..

IM so happy to hear everyone doing so well.  I love to see everyone happy.  I have become a happier person on the mission and I love it.  I love Jesus Christ and God.  I’m super happy here in Argentina.  I love being a missionary.  I so glad I wasn’t stupid and stayed home... Thanks for all your support and keep up the happiness and love more and more!!!
This is the assistant that is going home this transfer.  His name is Elder Pickett.  He is really cool and taught me a monton de cosas on the miss.

Chapter 15: Bilingual Red head‏

We got a little messy doing some service.  We sanded some plaster in one of our investigators houses after a lesson.

Hola Family,
I’m glad to be emailing you today... in English.... haha I have missed my native language of English and don’t see it coming anytime to soon.

This week I took a big step and put some pictures that I had out of the family, some amigas... and friends! I felt like I was distracted a little.. Especially from hearing my mom’s letter every week with encouraging words that make me feel bad. Haha but I really turned myself to the Lord and this week.. The blessings came and the Lord let his love show.

Monday, after p day all our appointments fell through and we just got some stuff done with some contacting!! It went well.
Tuesday, we worked hard and had some appointments set up.  We have a rule in the mission that we can’t arrive to lessons in cars with only a women.  So we walked in front of this car and my comp got mad because he thinks we were close enough to the cita to ride in the car... So... I got in my first Latin language fight.  It wasn’t too bad, we figured things out, and things are good now.  We actually started to get a long this week really well.
We have been searching for this investigator, His name Juan Ross.  We never were able to find him with Elder Hill.  But we went to him and tried to find him.. He is of gold.  He asked if we wanted to come to his house every week for lunch.  We accepted nicely with smiles, and then set a baptism date for Nov. 15.  He needs to get married that is why we set it for so far away.  He is so awesome.  He loved my accent and rubbed my head like Dad does when he is proud.  I felt really good!!

The rest of the week is really a blur.
 So here is a summary.

This week we taught Carlos again, and he is so prepared.  He is keeping the commitments and is doing everything we ask.  He is happy to do it.  The only thing he lacks is going to church and dropping working on Sunday and getting married.  So we changed his date to Nov. 15 as well.  He and his wife are awesome and very prepared for this gospel.  The picture of us with paint everywhere is at his house!!

Then we have the family of three ladies and a dad.  Cynthia (24) Brisa (13) and the mom Alysia, and the Pops.  I forgot his name.  But, they accepted baptisms dates this week.  For 18 de octubre.  I wasn’t present in the lesson this week so I wasn’t able see the faces when they accepted.  But, things are really good with them.. They had prior engagements so they were not able to come to church but they promised to come to the next reunion!!! I’m so excited to help them come unto Christ!!!

The last miracle for the week is that we have been working with some menos activos and they have been hard,  They haven’t attended church in a long time.  So we worked hard.  One is an old lady.. Abuelita Blanca.  She is OOOLLLDDDD, man.  She finally came and had a smile on her wrinkly face from ear to ear!  Also another family of 4.  The mom is a less active and her daughter that IS 12 years old.  She has a son Tobias that is 6 years old.  And then her husband is the Brother to the stake pres. and is not a member.  We worked hard with them this week and now, they finally came this week!! except The husband... hahah but, That was a miracle of Menos Activos.  I’m so pumped to help them!!!

Well I got to go get some ice cream!!! :) Haha

Love you guys so much!! Keep working hard!!!  Remember, ¨_ He who loses his life for me, shall find it_

Jesus Christ lives.  He is our Savior.  God answers prayers. I have seen it.  I know this church is true.

I love you guys and all but I don’t want to come home anytime soon.. I just want to serve these people.  The people are so nice and loving.  I love learning about the gospel and seeing people prepared to hear this gospel.  It’s so amazing!!
I LOVE MY FAMILY AND THIS GOSPEL!!!

Chapter 14: WIthout my language‏ September,15,2014

gota love my new companion "He's from Peru"

HOOOOLLa homies,

Holy cow, what a week.  Seriously.  Started out with some solid transfers and welcoming in the New Peruvian.  Sorry I don’t have a pic of him.  We are the best of friends yet and didn’t take pics yet.  I will get one this week.  How is the fam? How bout Sami making it big back in shutah!! That’s how Latin’s say it!! haha the fam looks good I’m pumped to see every doing good!!

You guys, I’m so happy right now.  The new comp is great.  He is very obedient so we are doing some good stuff to Cultral Co now.  In predicad mi evangelio it says to leave where you are better than you found it.  You guys I think I’m going to do that.  This week we set up 3 new baptism dates and found 7 new investigators.  IM sad to tell you that the baptism last week was not mine.  It was the other elders.  I just was the only that cared.  Haha sorry for the confusion.

They really love Jesus

This week, I haven’t spoke a lick of English. I can’t express the happiness I have of writing you guys in English. I’m happy to tell you this miracle that happened to us;

We were walking home from one of our lunches to start a fast. We are fasting to get 1 baptism as a companionship. but it was like 130 in the afternoon.  Everything in the city is shut down from 1 to 5 in the afternoon in cause of the siesta.  (nap)  Haha but this corner kiosco was open.  I told my comp that we need to go there and get an alfajores before we start this fast.  The only store that was open during the siesta.  So we entered.  We bought two alfajores.  They are like little cake things.  Look them up on google.  We were just about to leave, When all of a sudden we heard.."De donde Son?" (Where are you from?)  We turned around and explained.  He asked why we are here so far away from our families for a religion.  Something caught his attention.  He had to get back to work so we set something up to come back at 6 o clock later that day.   We passed by at 6 without tardiness. We introduced ourselves and got to the prayer.  My comp asked if we could shut the door to the store. He did without hesitation.  We started off with a prayer.  We taught the restoration in full to him and his wife. The spirit was so strong with everyone and fill the store even the soda bottles!! We set a fecha for the 18 of Octubre.  The last day for the transfer.  They accepted but they said only if they could learn more.  Talk about music to our ears!!! haha we terminated with a pray and the floods of people came in.  30 seconds after I said the closing prayer, 6 or 7 people flooded in.  It was insane.  The Holy Ghost locked up that store!! IT is so awesome to see these miracles in the mission.  This guy’s name is Carlos, and his wife I forgot.  We went to get them for church but they couldn’t go.  We are planning on big things for them this week. Pray for them.

We also found a family of 4 that was chosen of god as well to investigate this church.  The mom is very accepting and very encouraging of her daughters making their own choices.  We taught the restoration with a Mormon message from the internet.  It was the one with Padre Terranal, Padre Celestial.  I don’t know what it is in English.  But it brought the spirit and then we taught the restoration.  We didn’t invite to be baptized but the 13 yr. old girl asked if she could pray at the end of the lesson.  This family is chosen.  I don’t remember all the names, but when you pray form them, pray for the familia de Alicia!

We did a lot of working.  We don’t talk that much.  We just work.  We have been super obedient this week.  That is why I think we got blessed of God! Mom and Dad always stress obedience but I’m thinking they don’t know what they are talking about.  Haha But, this week we pressed hard to be exactly obedient and it work out.  I’m super happy and the spirit is radiant in me.  A lot of things happened but I felt like these are the most important things to share this week.

Thank you for your support always! All the love from everyone.  I really can’t explain how blessed I am and how thankful.  I hopefully can show you guys through hard work in the week to come.

I LOVE YOU GUYS:  scream it with love it sounds better.  I just did it in this computer place now I look weird in front of a bunch of Latinos!! haha

Chapter 13: 4 with a spun mind September,8,2014

We have been here a long time
I’m Glad i have my journal with me today because this week went by way fast and I don’t remember anything about this week... It was a blur!!!!
Great Member here in Argentina

Monday:
The first day of September.  And it was P day!! So we wrote the Fams, and spent a lot of time in cyber waiting for other missionaries.  The of course we went to Gridos.  It’s an Ice Cream place! We go every week.  After that we played futbol en la capilla.  It gets pretty crazy.  We play arroz con leche, or one seat or under the table.  Pretty physical.  We were lucky everyone walked away injury free.  Tonight we didn’t do that much.  But we went and got my ticket for me to go to Neuquen again.  Then we went to HMA Blanca{s house and sang a hymn and prayed with her!  After we tried to find someone but, ya fue! haha We called it a night with a rare thunder storm watching where we got on top of the house and posted up and watched it!! While it was raining!! It was so cool!!
The Zone
Tuesday:
Today i just went to Neuquen from 530 in the morning until 1930 hrs. at night!! that’s for Tim.  We don’t use the afternoon times.  We use military time down here!! haha but I just hung out with the elders in the office and helped them move penisions and just had a good time! I am officially a citizen of the Argentina republic!!!! haha Can you believe it? I still love the United States more!!

Zone Confrence

Pepermint patties

Wednesday:
We did a lot of walking today.  Without giving count we ended up with a really good day.  We ended up teaching a lot of people short lessons.  The day seemed like it was going really slow, then it just turned out to be a killer day!
So we started off in the morning with teaching fernando.  The little brother to Hernan.  He is a menos activo.  He texted us yesterday and wanted us to come over while I was in NQN.  So I asked him if we could pass today. We kind of just taught about how Christ can help us. We helped because he has a fear of the dentist and he knew we could help feel that.  I feel very special after that.  Very humbled.
Then we went on our way and found our Homie Juan_manuel and taught him outside his house.  I think he was inside alone with a women.... ;) everyone drove by knocking he is famous around here!  He said he feels like he just doesn’t belong.  So we will help him out with finding himself connected to the church!  Then we went out into this deserted area that we haven’t visited yet.  We went and knocked some doors and found Carmen.  She seems super prepared and was interested in the B.O.m.  So we set up a return appointment for Friday.  Then after that we found our boy Carlos and his kids.  He was a contact that we found when I was playing baseball with his kids in the streets in from of his house.  He’s super cool and had some good questions about Baptism.  Didn’t ask a fecha but we are going to set it this week.  I’m super pumped to the people we found today.  God really blessed us this day.
Area Confrence
Thursday:
I want to start off by saying does anything ever go as planned in the world of a missionary? So we had a ton of stuff set up well, really just 2 service projects, weekly planning and a reunion.
Turns out, we had more to do.  We went to go got elder hills suit coat and then that took years to go get because she lives out in the boonies and we had to walk.  Then we had lunch.  We came back and taught with our vascino.  We were going to help with service but it rained a ton.  So we just did a lesson before.  David told us he had a dream that he saw this dead guy with a ton of stab wounds.  He said in his dream he prayed so this guy can be alive again.  Just after that he prayed in his dream, he said this huge white figure gave him a hug.  Said only to pray to God in the name of Jesus.  Not to Mother Mary.  Then this guy revived himself.  David is re prepared and understood.  We interpreted this to be baptism about all his struggles but to ask the help of god and receive new life.. I’m excited to teach him.  After, we taught estela.  We only had 1 of our weekly planning because we have a reunion at 6.  We taught in like 15 min.  Good day to be a missionary.
Look Mom I can lift a bike
Friday;
What another great day to be a worthy a missionary.  What a great day to love Jesus Christ and to show his love for all these people!!
Today my comp was in NQN doing tramites.  I walked with elder Cardenas and Figueroa.  It was a good day. I met a cool member that I didn’t really know.  Then we had a bomb lunch at HMA OTY!!
My comp arrived at 1530 then we made cookies to bring to Hma Jacque because she never comes to church.  She didn’t answer so we went to our investigators house to give them to him, but he didn’t answer, so we talked to his vascino and gave them to her.  Now, she ate a cookie and got slapped by the spirit.  She promised to read the book of Mormon and set a new day to visit her the next week that comes.  Then Hma Jaque called us and said come over.  We went over and she said she love the cookies.  But then we talked about her problem with church... she believes she doesn’t love God... and tampoco her husband... sooo that really sucks...
Saturday:
We had a baptism. No body showed up.  I found myself calling everyone in my phone to get people to come.  People ended up showing up.  I cooked alfredo for 22 people and it was crazy... I got to go tho... Sunday we visited a ton of people.  Elder hill left.  I’m getting a new comp today on Monday from Peru. See ya later English!!!! hahaha
So You Think You Can Dance...Argentina Style
Love ya!!
